Which CDL vehicle should you test in for an Austin job?
For an Austin-area contractor, the trailer can change the answer. Two people driving similar trucks around Round Rock or Georgetown may need different credentials because only one of them pulls a heavy equipment trailer.

Bring the ratings for both pieces of equipment
Ask your employer for the truck rating, trailer rating, how the trailer attaches and the type of brakes. Bring the details to DPS if your required class is uncertain. Once you know the class, we can discuss whether a Class A combination or a qualifying single vehicle fits your test.
Decide what you need beyond the permit
If you can drive and back safely but have never inspected this model, start with the vehicle information and pre-trip resources. If you are upgrading from B to A, check the applicable upgrade ELDT and the new permit before holding a combination vehicle.
Compare days away from an Austin jobsite
Write down which steps you can finish near home and which require the North Texas vehicle. Ask for the meeting and test dates in writing. A booked rental and a DPS skills appointment need to line up before you arrange job coverage.
What drivers ask us
I drive a straight truck now. Can I test for a future trailer assignment?
Describe the future combination and your current CDL when you call. We can discuss the truck and trailer to request, and which permit or upgrade questions to confirm with DPS first.
Choose your next step
- See the B-to-A upgrade path
- Compare the combination vehicle
- Review pre-trip familiarization
- Compare current prices
Have the truck and trailer ratings handy, even if your employer owns the equipment.
