TEXAS CLP PREPARATION

Texas CLP Practice Tests & Commercial Learner Permit Preparation

Build your Texas commercial learner permit study plan around the vehicle you want to drive. Get Your CDL Quick offers online CLP practice topics for Class A, Class B, passenger and school bus paths, plus individual endorsement practice.

Use the official Texas CDL handbook as your starting point. Then use practice questions to identify weak areas, review the relevant rules and check your understanding before your Texas DPS knowledge exams.

Texas DPS determines the exams and eligibility requirements for your application. Our online practice helps you review the topics; it does not issue a permit or license.

Main CLP knowledge-test study paths

Start with the Texas CDL handbook. DPS lists the knowledge exams in this order:

  1. Texas Commercial Rules.
  2. General Knowledge.
  3. Combination Vehicles, for Class A.
  4. Air Brakes, when applicable.
  5. Tests for the endorsements you need.

Class B applicants do not take the Combination Vehicles exam. Read the handbook section for each required topic. Then use practice questions to find the areas you need to study again.

Endorsement preparation

Choose endorsement topics for the work you plan to do. Passenger, School Bus and Tanker endorsements can be added to a CLP with restrictions. HazMat and Doubles/Triples endorsements apply to the CDL. For a first-time hazardous materials endorsement, required ELDT must be completed before the knowledge test. Texas also requires TSA clearance before issuing that endorsement. Check the Texas DPS endorsement rules before choosing study access.

Study one topic, then work on the mistakes

  1. Read the relevant handbook section. Understand the rule and why it matters before answering practice questions.
  2. Complete a practice attempt. Use the shuffled questions and answers to check what you can recall.
  3. Review missed topics. Return to the source material and explain the rule in your own words.
  4. Repeat the topic. Look for consistent understanding across attempts instead of memorizing answer positions.

Purchased practice access includes 30 days after activation and unlimited repeat practice during that period. Practice tests are preparation tools; the official permit examination is administered by Texas DPS.

CLP preparation is different from ELDT

There are separate steps between studying for a permit and taking the DPS skills test. These can include ELDT theory and in-person ELDT behind-the-wheel range and road activity. Practice-test access and a truck rental alone do not satisfy required ELDT. Before scheduling any driving activity, discuss your permit, existing skills and theory arrangements with us.

Plan your CLP application

A CLP lets you practice on public roads under supervision. Texas requires a qualified driver age 21 or older with the same CDL class to sit beside you. You must also carry your valid Texas driver license.

  1. Check your age and driving plans. Texas allows qualified applicants age 18 years and older to seek an intrastate CDL. Non-excepted interstate drivers must be at least 21. Review the DPS driving categories for the rules that fit your plans.
  2. Choose your vehicle. Review Texas CDL license types, endorsements and restrictions before picking your exams. Match your study topics to the type of vehicle you intend to drive.
  3. Gather your documents. Use the official Texas DPS application checklist. Check each document before your appointment and confirm that your Texas driver license is valid.
  4. Check medical requirements. Your self-certification tells DPS what kind of commercial driving you plan to do. It also affects whether you need medical certification. If you need a DOT physical, use an examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry. Texas receives medical exam results electronically. Review DPS medical certification guidance and check that your record has updated before your visit.
  5. Study and book your knowledge tests. Read the handbook sections for your exams. After a practice test, review each missed topic and explain the rule in your own words. DPS administers CDL knowledge tests in English. Our online practice is separate from the official examination.
  6. Plan your skills test. Hold your CLP for at least 14 days and complete any required ELDT before the skills exam. Confirm that your permit and any required medical certification are current. Then discuss a CDL test truck rental that fits your permit class and vehicle needs.
