Understand the steps before choosing a vehicle, study access or a reservation.

What is a CDL, and who issues it?

A commercial driver license authorizes specified commercial vehicles. Texas DPS issues Texas licenses after eligibility and testing requirements are met. A study certificate, ELDT completion record or vehicle rental is not a CDL.

How long does it take to get a CDL?

Timing depends on documents, permit issuance, applicable ELDT, proficiency and appointment availability. The 14-day CLP holding period is a minimum, not a promise that the whole process takes 14 days.

Do I have to attend a traditional CDL school?

A traditional school program is one option. Covered first-time Class A or B applicants still need applicable ELDT from a registered provider. Self-study, previous trailer experience and renting a truck do not replace that requirement. Get Your CDL Quick offers separately selected rentals and limited familiarization for customers with existing skills, with ELDT as a separate activity.

Class A, Class B, Class C and hotshot vehicles

Back to topics ↑

Choose the license for the vehicle you intend to drive.

What vehicles require a Class A CDL?

Class A covers qualifying combinations rated at 26,001 pounds or more when the towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds GVWR. Tractor-trailers are a common example. Endorsements and restrictions still apply.

What vehicles require a Class B CDL?

Class B generally covers a single vehicle rated at least 26,001 pounds and such a vehicle towing no more than 10,000 pounds GVWR. Texas also places vehicles designed for at least 24 occupants, including the driver, in Class B.

Check the cargo and configuration before selecting endorsements.

What does the H endorsement authorize?

How do I apply for HazMat in Texas?

Complete required first-time theory; follow the Texas DPS HME application and knowledge-exam process; obtain the service code and fingerprint instructions from Texas DPS; complete the security assessment; then wait for clearance and endorsement issuance. Do not begin vendor fingerprinting before Texas DPS’s required application step.

How long does the TSA HazMat review take?

Do I need to renew HazMat separately?

Security approval and the endorsement have expiration requirements. Texas DPS lists HME expiration as the license expiration or five years from TSA approval, whichever is earlier. Follow the renewal process rather than assuming an ordinary license renewal renews everything.

Restriction codes, manual transmissions and brakes

Read restrictions separately from endorsements on your license.

What is the difference between a class, endorsement and restriction?

Class identifies the vehicle group. An endorsement adds specified operating authority. A restriction limits that authority, such as transmission, brakes or interstate use. All three must fit the vehicle and trip.
