Two stories from the 2016 test rollout

Megan and Sam's recordings come from October 2016, when Texas introduced new CDL skills-testing standards. Their stories describe that rollout; current permit and ELDT requirements are explained in the guide.

Megan: from learning the parts to a pre-trip milestone

Open this video in a new tab

Megan says she passed her Class A test with flying colors after only 'like four days' driving a truck. In this archived 2016 interview, she credits Billy and her husband for helping her prepare, remembers not knowing what a lug nut was two weeks earlier, and describes the emotion of passing. She says she was the first woman in Texas to pass during the new pre-trip rollout and recalls seeing more than 20 other men fail to make it through the pre-trip that day. Watch Megan tell the story in her own words.

Billy remembers Megan as the 21st person statewide to pass the new pre-trip test and identifies her vehicle as a Peterbilt 387 with a 28-foot pup trailer. He contrasts that earlier truck with the newer Freightliner M2 options now offered.

Sam: Get Your CDL Quick’s first customer

Open this video in a new tab

Recorded on October 6, 2016, Sam's story captures the first week of Texas's new CDL skills-testing standards. Sam says his examiner told him he had not missed anything and that he was the second person to pass in Fort Worth that week. In the interview, Billy describes a Fort Worth FedEx driver and a San Antonio driver passing before Sam, making him third statewide in that account. Sam credits the preparation they reviewed the previous day and thanks Billy for helping him reach that milestone.

Billy identifies Sam as the company's first customer. He recalls organizing DPS material for independent pre-trip study and showing customers where components were located so they could study the inspection themselves.

Use the materials for your vehicle category

Choose Class A, Class B, Passenger or School Bus below. Authorized customers can review the material available for their category, including pre-trip references, visual study aids and practice flashcards. Work through the inspection sequence and connect each term to the part on the vehicle you intend to use.

The flashcard practice includes a 25-minute countdown that begins with the first submitted answer, correct and incorrect counts, and attempt history. Use the results to identify the inspection points that need more review before your visit.

Know which access you need

Customer Resources is a separate 30-day access selection. Follow the current access and activation instructions below, or enter your existing authorized guest code for the chosen vehicle category. Adding access to the cart does not activate it.

If you are studying for the permit’s knowledge exams, use Texas CLP practice access; that is a separate study selection. If you need vehicle arrangements, compare test truck and bus rentals and the individually offered familiarization services.

How to use Customer Resources

Choose Class A, Class B, or Passenger and School Bus to find the reference library for your vehicle. The separate libraries help customers review the correct pre-trip video, inspection references, checklists and study materials. These tools support your own review of knowledge and skills you already have.

Open the right library

Use the current guest code supplied by Get Your CDL Quick for the library you select. Codes change every Monday. If a code does not work, check that you have chosen the right vehicle class and ask our team for help. Please keep your code private and do not share access with others.

Review, write and recall

After you sign in, start with the pre-trip reference for your vehicle. Read a short section, then use the matching fill-in sheet to write the missing words. Repeat the exercise as directed. Next, try a fresh sheet without looking at the reference. Check your answers and spend more time on the parts you missed.

Viewing and printing

Each document has its own viewing and printing instructions. Use the print or download option only when one is provided. Other references are for viewing online. Videos and narrated slides can help you review at your own pace. You must enter the required code before any protected materials can open.

Official sources for independent review

Our inspection and licensing reference information draws on the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Handbook, DL-7C, revised March 2026; the Commercial Driver’s License Manual Supplement for Modernized Version, DL-7CM, version September 9, 2022; and published FMCSA guidance and federal regulations. DL-7C and DL-7CM are publication identifiers, not statute numbers.

We compile and organize references to make independent review easier. The official agencies establish the licensing and inspection standards. Company-produced videos, narration, checklists and review aids explain these topics; they are not publications issued by Texas DPS or FMCSA. The official sources can be read directly at no charge. Use current Texas DPS instructions when an older supplement differs from the current testing system.

Manual editions, publisher rights and legal references

The modernized supplement is an AAMVA publication hosted by Texas DPS. Public availability does not make every publication public domain. Publisher copyrights and use restrictions still apply. Texas DPS identifies its handbook for personal use and restricts commercial sales or reproduction. These source notices do not grant reproduction rights or imply agency endorsement.

Identifying public sources does not itself establish a regulatory approval or exemption. Texas DPS determines licensing and test results. Separate applicable ELDT obligations remain in effect.
