Keeping your home-state license or moving to Texas?

We welcome inquiries from Oklahoma and Arkansas. Tell us where you actually live and which state issued your license or permit. There are two different paths.

You still live in Oklahoma or Arkansas

Your home state ordinarily issues your permit and CDL. You can inquire about eligible Texas training and take your skills test at home. For someone trained in Texas, federal rules also allow Texas to administer a qualifying skills test and send results directly to the home state. The home state must accept a qualifying result, and its other licensing requirements still apply. Confirm the Texas testing office will handle your permit and class. A truck rental alone does not establish Texas training.

You are genuinely moving to Texas

We can help you work through the DPS checklist for your actual new residence. DPS generally asks for two printed acceptable documents showing your name and Texas residential address. Examples include a residential lease and a qualifying utility statement. DPS says CDL applicants and people surrendering a valid, unexpired out-of-state license or ID are among those exempt from the usual 30-day residency duration. Proof of residence is still required. The permit holding period is a separate requirement.

You live in Texas but have few documents in your name

Ask DPS whether the DL-5 Texas Residency Affidavit fits your living arrangement and what evidence and signatures it requires. If you genuinely live with someone, use the instructions for the actual relationship. The form also has provisions for qualifying representatives. We can point you to the form and help organize questions. Use truthful information about where you live. We do not supply or lend addresses for license applications. DPS decides which evidence it accepts.

Four questions to answer before paying for travel

  1. Which state will issue my CDL, and is my current permit valid for the intended class and endorsement?
  2. Will the proposed testing office accept my permit, training and appointment type? How will it send my skills-test result to my home state?
  3. Have my applicable theory and behind-the-wheel records been reported under the correct license details? What other state requirements apply?
  4. Do I have separate written confirmations for the vehicle, test date and meeting locations? Can I move my lodging if either appointment changes?

Call with your home state, permit class and intended testing state. Use the contact form for a callback; keep license numbers and identity documents off the public inquiry form.
