Planning a CDL test from a small Texas community
You don’t have to live near a big city to plan a CDL visit. If you’re coming from a farm, a county road crew, a small bus operator or a family business, start with what you already drive and what someone else will need to cover while you are away.
If your nearest DPS office handles permits
Check the separate list of offices that conduct CDL skills tests. A nearby office that handles your written exams may send you elsewhere for the driving test. Write down the appointment type and actual test-site address before choosing a truck.
If your family or employer has equipment
Check whether the truck and trailer fit the intended class, whether the paperwork is current and who can lawfully drive it to the appointment. If one of those pieces is missing, compare our rental price and test-site fuel with the cost of bringing your own equipment.
If your experience comes from farm or ranch work
Describe what you inspect, what you back and what you drive on public roads. Familiarity with a pickup and trailer helps us understand your background. Driving a commercial test vehicle safely takes more than recognizing parts or having pulled a trailer. Tell us which parts of the job you have never done.
If more than one family member or employee is coming
Keep one list per driver with permit dates, class, ELDT status and test time. Ask whether you can coordinate vehicle time on the same trip. Make flexible arrangements for lodging and work coverage until each reservation is confirmed.
What drivers ask us
Our town isn’t on the list. Can I still call?
Yes. Give us your town or nearest larger city, permit state and the vehicle you need. We can review a North Texas visit and tell you which details to confirm before leaving home.
From Victoria: preparing together after farm work
A couple from Victoria describes studying together for Class A. They brought experience with farm equipment, pickups and horse trailers. Listen for the parts of their background that sound like yours and the questions you would want to ask about a larger combination.
